Luxury accommodations combined with exposure to true, low-key, island life is a rarity. If you are looking for an authentic, off-the-beaten path experience while maintaining a five-star standard, Taha’a, off the coast of Raiatea is the destination.

Overview

Taha’a is a great place to truly escape! Vanilla-scented air flows down the hillsides courtesy of the island’s many vanilla farms.  The fragrant and beautiful setting helps you ease into an opportunity to truly get away from it all and relax. While you are here, your stay will be more about spending time at your resort and unwinding.  However, there are some great excursions available, as well.

Taha’a is the sister island to nearby Raiatea as they share the same lagoon. One airport, located on Raiatea, serves both islands. When you arrive on Raiatea, you will travel by boat to your resort on Taha’a.  The 30-45 minute boat ride helps you ease into island time and prepare yourself for rest and rejuvenation.

Raiatea has a special place in Polynesian history. It was the first island in the region to be populated. Raiatea is the starting point for most sailing charters in French Polynesia. The sailing conditions are excellent, and it is a pleasure cruising to the other nearby islands. Raiatea is also home to the only navigable river in French Polynesia.

Dining

Most of your dining on Taha’a will be at your resort. Le Taha’a includes breakfast daily and has some great restaurants for lunch and dinner. Please see our detailed Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts guide for more information.

Vahine Island Resort includes breakfast and dinner daily with lunch available as well. There are a few small restaurants and snack shops on the main island, however they can be difficult to access since the Taha’a resorts are on private islands. If you do make a trip to the main island of Taha’a, there is a store when you can purchase drinks and snacks for your room.

The Fascinating Reason for Turquoise Waters
The reason why some ocean water is more turquoise than others is due to the absorption and scattering of light, with absorption being a larger factor than scattering for clear ocean water. Waters in places like the Caribbean, South Pacific like in Bora Bora, and Greece are shallower and almost free of plankton, causing them to be a specific shade of azure blue. These waters are also usually home to heavier sand and sediment, which churn up less, leaving waters more clear. Additionally, these little slices of paradise tend to experience less "upwelling," which can turn water murkier.

First-Class Comfort on an Economy Budget
Travelers should not scoff at other people's inflight habits, as the cramped and often undignified nature of flying makes it essential to make the experience more comfortable. Instead of sniggering at someone trying to make their flight comfortable, passengers should emulate them by creating their own version of business class. The author suggests packing a large scarf, all-purpose cream, a temperature-preserving bottle, a foot hammock, an eye mask, and noise-canceling headphones. Passengers should also consider downloading a meditation session or soothing podcast to help them relax.

Surfing Puts Wild Destination on the Map
The remote village of Teahupo'o in Tahiti is gaining recognition for its world-renowned waves that attract surfers like Kelly Slater and Laird Hamilton. The Gotcha Tahiti Pro in 1998 was a turning point for Teahupo'o as it brought recognition for its waves. Teahupo'o will host one of the biggest surfing competitions in 2024 and is also slated to host surfing events for the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, some locals have mixed feelings about the event as they fear it may change the landscape of the village.

Which Polynesian Islands and Hotels to Visit in 2024
Which islands to visit and how many islands you should visit depends a lot on how long you plan to stay in French Polynesia. We typically advise clients to spend at least 3 nights on each island in their itinerary (except possibly the Island of Tahiti). Spending less than 3 nights tends to make travelers feel too rushed. After all, you are going there to at least try to relax.

I wanted to say thanks for helping us set up an amazing trip. We are home safe & sound! Everything was wonderful-- I am so happy you recommended the Shark & Ray tour on Bora Bora-- it was by far our favorite thing that we did! We ended up relaxing on Taha'a as it was the most perfect place to unwind and get massages. All of the hotels were awesome-- Le Taha'a Resort and The Conrad were our favorites! We absolutely loved our beach bungalow (it was huge!!)
